Decoding the Trend | 6 Lessons in Texture Clashing

It’s too easy to mourn the loss of summer - endless blue skies and sunshine, lightweight linen clothing, cotton tops and cheesecloth pieces filling every portion of our closets - but there’s a lot to rejoice in when fall and winter arrive. Sartorially speaking, colder months mean more clothes to play with, different types of fabrics to mix and match, and finished looks with more interest. Outfits are layered with multiple textures meeting to create one covetable whole.

Here, we break down the six lessons we’ve learned when it comes to playing with more textures. It heroes deeper tones, and hints of color, luxuriously soft knitwear, smooth leather, and structured tailoring.

1 | LEATHER + KNITWEAR IS A FAILSAFE COMBO

Whether it’s butter-soft Italian leather or patent faux leather clothing, when the fabric is introduced to soft knitwear, the result is always a bold texture clash.

Play with high-shine and matte finishes by pairing our Patent Faux-Leather Midi Skirt with a glossy lustre with our Merino Cashmere Silk Relaxed Sweater + Snood. The glossy lustre of the skirt creates a clean break with the super-soft blend of merino wool and cashmere defining the sweater. In a darker shade of lilac than the knit, our Corduroy Boyfriend Blazer pulls together your look with a third texture that keeps with the same palette.

Build a more tonal look by choosing our Leather Midi Skirt as the base of your ensemble and layering up with pieces in shades of charcoal and black for a cohesive look with subtle textural differences. We turned to our Merino Cashmere Crop Half Zip Sweater and Bracelet Sleeve Bouclé Contour Jacket in black. Leave the zipped neckline of the knit undone and layer it over a turtleneck top to introduce a fourth texture and tone to your finished look.

2 | SUEDE + CASHMERE + SILK NEVER LET YOU DOWN

Three is the magic number and this trio of textures is a failsafe.

We bring suede, cashmere, and silk clothing together in a look that plays with classic neutrals and color-pop pieces: our Suede Mix High-Waisted Midi Skirt paired with our Silk Oversized Shirt layered under our Cashmere Sleeveless Relaxed Zip Hoody. Layer up with our blazer-coat hybrid and pull on our 70s Knee High Boot as the final piece to your finished ensemble before you head out.

3 | CORDUROY + CHUNKY KNITWEAR ARE AN HOMMAGE TO FALL TEXTURES

The sartorial equivalent of leaf-strewn streets, corduroy comes into its own in the fall. And while it usually makes an appearance in classic neutrals or warming hues, we’re celebrating the fabric in a brighter guise throughout our fall-winter collections by pairing it with our Winter Lilac colorway.

We hero the combination on a pair of pants, an A-line skirt, and a new iteration of our Boyfriend Blazer that can be paired in your pick of combinations to address different settings and satisfy different tastes.

Whichever combination you choose, turn to a chunky knit to introduce that all-important texture clash to your look. Our Chunky Cashmere-Blend High Neck Sweater in toffee breaks up a head-to-toe color look with a new grounding neutral.

4 | DENIM + KNITWEAR EFFORTLESSLY FIND A HIGH-LOW BALANCE

Italian denim jeans and knitwear - better yet cashmere-blend or brushed-cashmere knitwear - creates an easy texture clash while also finding a covetable high-low balance that is never over- nor under-dressed.

Start with our Low-Rise Baggy Crop Jean and layer up accordingly. We’ve chosen our Brushed Cashmere V Neck Cropped Sweater Vest for this first take, emphasising the neat angles and cut with a collared blouse. Alternatively, our Merino Cashmere Ribbed Scoop Neck Sweater Vest creates the same space as a V-neckline but heroes smooth curves that introduce the same aesthetic of a round neckline to your look while accommodating and complementing all bust sizes - it also acts as the perfect frame to the embroidered details decorating our Silk Organza Cherry Blossom Print Blouse.

5 | SUEDE + KNITWEAR BRING RICH TEXTURES TO THE FORE

Texture clashing isn’t all about combining a matte finish with a lustrous one, two luxuriously tactile fabrics can still create a contrast when styled together to build a covetable whole.

Case in point: a cosy blend of merino wool and cashmere and smooth suede, a.k.a. our Merino Cashmere Contrast Panel Sweater and Suede Mix High-Waisted Midi Skirt. Leave the knit loose or tuck it into the skirt’s waistband to create a neater, more defined finish and complete your look with our 70s Knee High Boot.

6 | LEATHER + SHEARLING ALWAYS CREATES A LUXE FINISH

An easy win when you don’t want to look too dressed up or too casual, leather pieces paired with shearling jackets effortlessly find a balance thanks to leather’s connotations with more elevated off-duty outfitting.

Perfect capsule wardrobe investments, our Leather Tapered Pant and Shearling Short Coat perfect this look with a striking texture clash. Find a way to introduce this pairing to every portion of your week by switching up the top you’re styling the pieces with; silk blouses ready you for days at your desk followed by dinner while soft knitwear creates a more casual finish for when the weekend arrives.
